Dr Who season finale…thoughts…

Posted in Dr Who by Tony C on June 30, 2007

K and I have just sat thought the final episode of the this series of Dr Who…and K is incandescent.  Yep she’s pissed with Russell T and I’ve got to agree.  The Master unbeknown to me is K’s favorite character from Dr Who and she felt that he was treated as nothing more than a comedy villain, not to mention killing him off…sort of.  OK, the ring being picked up was intriguing but in a oh-so Ming the Merciless sort of way.

So The Master as comedy bad guy was the main problem but it didn’t end there.  The Captain Scarlet Cloud Base nonsense jarred against the backdrop of the rest of the preset day, yes I understand The Master is a clever so and so and could easily create such technology but it seemed so out of place.  The rewind the clock time travel bit at the end was beneath them too and so script cliche 101 that I can’t believe no one noticed; it’s like going into a shop guitar shop and playing Smoke on the Water.

But don’t misunderstand there were some really great bits which included…

The Doctor’s return.
Martha’s walk around the earth and the myth creation of a super weapon.
The scene where The Master refuses to regenerate and ‘dies’.
Martha leaving the Tardis.
Derek Jacobi.
The Face of Boe twist.

However they can’t make up for the fact that The Master wasn’t the subtle, sinister and malevolent presence he should have been.  With the rest of the series being so good it’s a shame it ended without the superb flourish we all expected but all diamonds have their flaws I suppose.  Next time Mr R T Davies needs to call K before sodding about like this again….what next?  Dancing Cybermen?  Ummmmm…

In a slight defence of Davis: Whenever the Doctor regenerates he changes personality.Since the Master is also a Timelord, shouldn’t we expect similar personality changes. Compare for example William Hartnell’s grumpy, selfish, and occasionally evil character with Tom Baker’s comic buffoon. That is almost exactly the same change as we saw in the Master. The fact that the first 4 incarnations of him all have basically the same ‘personality’ is wrong if you want to keep Timelord continuity.

And anyway, would the public have accepted it if he had not changed? Remember when the Doctor returned to his original (William Hartnell) personality when Colin Baker took over. His Doctor was so unpopular that he was the first actor to get fired from the roll, and many fans believe that his Doctor started the decay that killed the series.

You’re taking it a bit too seriously Tone…?

Please, please, please… when David Tennant decides he’s had enough, give the role to Harry Hill. A man with brothel creepers and huge collars facing Daleks will be good t.v. methinks.

Something I remembered (plank warning)… I read somewhere that the Doctor can only regenerate 12 times, meaning there can only ever be 13 Doctors [confirmed on Wikipedia]. David Tennant is the 10th. Now, this may concern the producers as it doesn’t leave many regenerations.

In the final episode of this series, The Master used his souped-up sonic screwdriver and turned the Doctor into a sorta ‘mini-me’ version, and said something to the effect of “…as if none of the regenerations had ever happened”. Perhaps someone will confirm that… but that could be a crafty way of working around the 12 regenerations.

    Or did I imagine it?

That last episode was THE worst episode I have ever seen.

The entire run has been p155 poor, only episode 11 and some of 12 were actually good.

Sooner that RTD buggers off the better
