Spooks: end of term report

Posted in Spooks, TV by Tony C on November 9, 2010

Spooks has shown some legs as the ninth series comes to and end and a tenth being promised in 2011.  Utter hokum as it obviously is despite the producers regular attempts to prove otherwise, any drama about MI-5 is going to sail close to current events eventually, the lack of sentimentality for major characters and their regular culling has kept it fresh; only Harry Pearce and Ruth Evershed seeming able to dodge the regular barrage of bullets and random explosions.

This series along with usual stuff about rogue states, assassins and the cold war that never ended, sees Lucas North ( he of the prison tattoos and chromatic flashbacks) as his past catches up and reminds him he’s not actually Lucas North.  As all this is going on the two new recruits Beth Bailey and Dimitri Levendis are rather side-lined after some cursory backstory fleshes them out but it’s soon heads down as Lucas sets off the four episode timer marked ‘self destruct’.  For a split second at the end I thought they might let Lucas escape into the tenth series but the end result was rather anticlimactic.  I’m not sure Harry will be out a job for long.

Just watched final episode I had thankfully recorded on the Digibox, totally brillliant the BBC at its very very very best. Just love it.

Too bad those of us in the US don’t have this kind of quality programs. Spooks, Life On Mars and others are such a breath of fresh air to us in the states! Thank you BBC.

      • Sean McKenna said, on February 8, 2011 at 5:02 am

I agree. But we here in US have a terrible tendency of taking fine British television and mucking it up. we tried to redo Life On Mars and are now in process of doing a hatchet job on Being Human. The last thing we were able to take and modify was Sanford and Son (Steptoe and Son in the UK)! 🙂 Even The Office is a pale imitation. Look and what we did to La Femme Nikita!! 🙂

You had West Wing, finest series to come out of US. We haven’t done a decent politacal series for years, if ever

    • Michael Reeves said, on June 6, 2011 at 7:38 pm

It is June 6th, 2011. I have just finished a marathon on XXXXXXX (subscription viewing service) of all currently available seasons of MI5 as it is called here in the US. WHEW! I am exhausted!!! The last time I did this was when Season 8 was the last available. Approximately 84 hours or so assuming a full 60 mins w/ commercials.

Rather than trying to produce and re-do an Americanized version of ‘Spooks’, I really wish American screen writers would just syndicate a BBC series sometimes.

Someone made mention of ‘La Femme Nikita’ in an earlier posting. First, the TV series was NOT an American production, it was Canadian, and overall, I think they did an excellent job of taking the concept and rewriting it for a TV series.

The American version of the the movie, however, starring Bridgette Fonda, I agree wasn’t the best or truest to the original.

However, if you really want to be critical of the American movie industry’s attitude toward toward the American public, take a look at the butchering job done to the ‘Jason Bourne’ series of movies which are VERY loosely based on the books. The books were excellent. The movies in no way reflect the intrigue or suspense present in the novels.

The closest adaptation I have seen was a Black-n-White made-for-tv miniseries that was about 6 hours long. Much of the dialogue is taken directly from the text, as well as the scenes and locations described within the tome. (The Bourne Identity (novel), a 1980 novel by Robert Ludlum; The Bourne Identity (1988 film), a telefilm adaptation of the novel, starring Richard Chamberlain and Jaclyn Smith). As I viewed this version of the book, I kept thinking I was re-reading the text.

Another series which was adopted and pretty much butchered by the American movie industry is Ian Fleming’s ‘James Bond, 007’. A classic point is the ‘Casino Royale’. This particular novel has had movies or a mini-series made about it. The earliest rendition was a black-n-white tv mini-series. It was dry, and didn’t sport all the action scenes that is seen in later versions. It was an ADAPTATION of the novel which American screenwriters are loath to seriously approach.

If you want to do another serious comparison, look at the BBC productions of C.S.Lewis’ ‘The Chronicles of Narnia’ and compare to the tripe that is being produced for the American public. C.S. Lewis writings seriously incorporate his religious beliefs which is mainly lost in the American movie versions of his books.

Monetary profit seems to be the driving force behind the American theatrical industry. Movies based on literary works are forced into a viewing time frame of 1.5 – 2.0 hours generally. It has been determined, apparently, that this is the statistically optimum time to maximize profits.

As a result, character development and plot/storyline is often lost in the editing process (assuming it existed in the screenplay/script to begin with) to make an American ACTION film that fits into this time slot.

      IMHO,

      MJR

Well you missed one, there is an American production of Le Femme Nikita on TV, it is on the channel known as CW, and it is everybit as bad as any other American attempt tp co-opt a series, ever see what Americans did to Coupling, the BBC series written by Steven Moffat? It does prove your case! I await for Series 10 of MI-5 (Spooks) to be released on DVD in the US.

Too bad Spooks / MI-5 will end after season #10 (being aired in 2012 here in USA)
It was a very good show and I hope they either bring it back, or start a newer and
better series about MI-5 or MI-6 … either would be good as the writing, plots and
        acting was superb.

I just finished watching Series 10 on DVD here in the states. I really love it. It was hard to see Richard go, but I guess New Zealand is his next trip. He makes a killer dwarf!

I had the pleasure of watching spooks while I was working in the UK. I wish the producers would have continued the series. You do not often find cinematic work on the scale of this series. Simply without question the very best!!!!

Disappointed, expected something more for the last episode, not their usual explosive finally.

This is my favorite since I saw it in London in 2003. But this ending was predictable and a bit disappointing. I have some hopes for season 10 if there is one.

So will there be a series 10 or no?

      • Phaedra Hillbourne said, on March 18, 2011 at 9:14 pm

There’s just been a script readthrough – I understand filming is imminent. So…yes…..

The idea is that this will be the last series. It would be great to see some older characters back, and believe it or no there are a few who didn’t get killed off!

      • Lee Ann said, on May 29, 2011 at 7:41 pm

When will it start? Season 9 disappointed a bit, but still looking forward. I agree that more could have been made of Harry murdering the Home Secretary, but it didn’t feel wrong to leave it as if it wasn’t so much.

Just watched the last episode for the second time. Absolutely great series, was a shame that Lucas/John did what he did in the end, but all good things as they say.

Really hope that Harry is kept in post – can’t imagine anyone else in that role to be honest. He makes the series what it is, given the refresh rate on lead characters…

Please hurry up with the new series 🙂

    • Chris said, on November 23, 2010 at 1:09 pm

What did Lucas do? Did he jump did he fall? Did he disappear back down the stairs in the sameway he appeared. No one confirmed him as dead!! By the way Tom is still about somewhere from series 1 and 2

I agree with you, need Harry and Lucas, i have been thinking what if this is an ellaborate undercover plot and in a future episode Lucas/John pops up? I think Harry looking over was a red herring to throw us off, yes i think the door is open for return, i hope so will not be the same

It is DEFINITELY is worth investing in the box set. I have a copy of all episodes through Series 8. I am eagerly awaiting news from BBC Canada for the scheduling of Series 9 this Winter here in Canada. Please pass this note along if you can to the powers that be at BBC One.

Plead for a series 10. It is one of Britain’s true gems!!!!!

I was disappointed that Roz was killed off too.

Relieved to see that there will be a series 10. Long live Harry and Ruth!

    Cheers for the commentary.
I honestly was disappointed that the Beeb buggared us with that pathetic Spooks/MI-5 hanging last episode… certainly not up to a solid cliffhanger in my eyes. Rather weak.

Must say thanks to the folks who provide streaming access to episodes, as the BBC seems to find some excuse to prevent the remnant of the realm from partaking of their online episode viewer. Bizarre little fiefdom there. Someone should tell THEM the ‘cold war’ is over, and the Internet liberated a great many things…

In the US, we’re still just getting to the end of series 8. I’ve been a Spooks fan from my first exposure on BBCAmerica–which now has NO programs as good as this. Endless repeats of Gordon Ramsay and Star Trek TNG. Gah.

  17. beelz said, on November 24, 2010 at 12:51 pm

I take that back–we’re at the end of Series SEVEN. Thanks to our Public Broadcasting Service, we’re only two seasons behind. BBCAmerica stopped showing the series after the 4th series.

Will it go the way of the Sandbaggers…too close to the truth……..??

  19. P Runesqual said, on December 3, 2010 at 11:29 pm

Well, season nine looked as though it had run out of steam as the action became so much more boringly turned on itself and the staff’s own issues rather than sorting out terry. Becoming like East Enders according to some but not nearly so much concentrated dross as that series, I should imagine.
Rather than serious personality issues of the staff, please stick to Regnum Defende activities and defeating terry AND the FO types in the HO – so much more true to life and exciting.

I love this show!Yes, thanks to my local PBS station I have the pleasure of watching seasons 6 and 7. It is so late here! Why is it that I can’t get the show on BBCA properly? I know that Beelz and I aren’t the only ones watching the show here. I have decided to order the complete set from 1-9 so that I can watch the show and see how it all unfolded. I was HEARTBROKEN when Mr.Jones was blown up off of the show (oh my I could look at him for hours) and now I hear the guy that took his place is gone..character Lucas (I could look at that guy for hours too–maybe even learn his name) and Roz is gone.. i loved her. oh well I shall spend the 300 and buy the series. For my money, I could watch Spooks, Dr. who, the choir, anything Ramsey, Lark Rise, Graham Norton, and The Catherine Tate show on BBCA. But no.. we get startrek and Ramsey’s old shows.. THATS IT.. IM MOVING TO THE UK. LOL.

It sounds like you’re doing pretty much what I’m doing, and I at least had the luxury of having been able to see the whole thing from the beginning! Well, at least I know what I missed and can catch up. I now have 1-3, and 7 where Lucas (Richard Armitage – yes, I like him too) comes in.

You might not like it in the UK at the moment – a bit cold! At least we have the Dr Who Christmas special to look forward to.

  23. ETNIKS said, on December 17, 2010 at 10:57 pm

I’m in the US so perhaps what we see here is different to the UK.
I just saw the chapter where MI 5 has Rose to infiltrate the “Bilderberg” meet (they call it different) and insurgents crash it to judge its members in a mock court open to the world via sophisticated online technology, and execute the first one.

The BBC is in the business of inoculating its audience against the truth by presenting credible charges by ordinary people towards the biggest terrorists in the world (the Bilderberg members) and turning them instead as “victims” of these young idealists whose humanity, as shown by their shock on the outcome of their own behavior after the execution, is used by the BBC screen writers, against them.

The subtle relentless brainwashing by the BBC is becoming as annoying as the US TV series counterparts.

I guess in today’s times it is impossible to be human and honest if you want to have exposure on TV as a producer.

MI 5 as the series is known here in the US, has been going from realistic to brain-washy and ideologically supportive of the Status Quo in its process to destroy the world. All the charges presented are factual and yet no recourse is suggested by the BBC as to how to deal with this infamy.

My interest on it is really taking a dive. It’s just another CSI crap with a Brit accent.

Re: Etniks comment, Can’t you just enjoy a good show. The US can’t even come close to this kind of drama in a TV series. Not all of us are looking for a “deeper-sinister- meaning” even if we are informed!

    • ETNIKS said, on December 26, 2010 at 4:54 pm

      Hi Liz,
You said ” Not all of us are looking for a “deeper-sinister- meaning” even if we are informed!”

As I explained in my piece, I have been watching this series because it offers a much more realistic portrait of what’s happening out there, like when the Iranian chapters were shown, Iranians appeared more humanized and the Brits more realistic when they are shown to make terrible mistakes by exploding a bomb in Teheran’s train station with horrific consequences (after being manipulated by the CIA).
But then the Russian chapters started full of Cold War anachronic ideological overtones that only perpetuates hate and violence.

During this particular program dedicated to the atrocities the Bilderberg group does, the BBC managed to convert them into victims, and the youngsters who are trying to bring the hidden facts into the open, as hideous terrorists.
By doing this the BBC is inoculating the audience to the eventual outing of the facts supporting the barbarism this select group of ultra rich manipulators are doing.

Don’t kid yourself into believing “this is just a movie” because this is exactly how the masses of people are being brainwashed into inaction and come to accept servitude.

How can you claim to “be informed” when you don’t see what is obvious in front of you? It is NOT a “deeper-sinister meaning”, it is actually pretty much on the surface for those who really are informed. You have been subliminally zapped.

Completely unlike any TV show here in the States. I do love it and really wish I’d started watching years ago. Probably shouldn’t have read some of the comments on this page as we are behind in the episode sequence! Doesn’t matter really, I’ll watch anyway.

Thought brilliantly acted by Richard and the rest of the cast, the plot was a disaster from start to finish, it was as though the writers didn’t realise Lucas was in Series 7 & 8 as he continuity went out of the window.
After being 8 years in Russia, supports his colleagues to the point of almost being killed and more, surely if he had this hidden character the russians would have got it out of him after all they had him for long enough. Not plausible at all this Bateman character, very disappointed as up to this saga the programme had been excellent from Serias 1.

This has been basically a spy soap for years. I watch it, only because there`s nothing much else on.The Lucas/John/Maya nonsense has been boring and indifferently acted. The Lucas North character has been made into an avatar, whose actions are totally out of kilter with previous seasons. It`s a good thing Lucas has been killed off, I never found him, or Richard Armitage, interesting, apart from his looks.Bring back Hermione Norris, Rupert Penry-Jones and Gemma Jones;people who can actually act.I`m hoping the Vincent regan character will become a fixture.Max Brown and Sophia Myles were too bland.

As for other seasons really miss Adam Carter and the writing of that era. Would be cool to see him or the fellow from the beginning show up sometime. All in all good espionage entertianment.
I am glad they are picking on China, the Chinese Communist Party IS the MEGA CORP of the world today with their own slave labour workforce, and more industrial spies spreadout al over the planet than you can imagine, so it’s about time they addressed it. KUDOS on that.

This show is like a weekly Bond film-except not as absurd. The character overhauls refresh the show and it’s hard not to get bored. We all miss Roz-who had 2 lives.
US shows keep the same characters grinding away until they become cartoons of themselves-so claps all around for BBC

I just stumbled upon this site while searching to find out what happens to Ros after the explosion at the end of series 8. I just finished watching series 8 because, like others in the US have said, the DVD set gets released a year later than in the UK.

While I am delighted that Ruth has returned from the dead with a great story line to open series 8, I am so unhappy to learn that Ros gets killed at the end of it. She is much too smart for that, knowing that the bomb was about to go off. If she survived a fake death and near burial in series 6, she certainly should have survived this blast. I still will expect her to turn up later after recovering at a safe distance. Perhaps, Zoe and her photojournalist partner did not find South America the paradise they believed it to be in series 3? Maybe Zoe returned home and took up nursing where she is now caring for Ros until they both can return to Section D? How about it, Kudos?

By the way, if I had to choose favorite episodes, series 3 final with Fiona and Danny was incredible! And, Ruth and Harry’s moments together in series 5 when Ruth has to leave are bittersweet and brillant.

Please, please, please let’s have a series 10!

I started watching Spooks from season6 by chance & can’t stop chasing it. Finished season9 & can’t wait to see season10. Am now onto season2.

Lucas & Roz were my favorite section chief. Yet to get to know Adam Carter though…

To all of you, may i know why Spooks only have average 8-10 episodes as compared to those US series ard 20-24 episodes. Wish BBC has made more per season so that we don’t have to wait for so long….

America is great at thinking up gadgets, marketing crap to people. We are nearly incapable of telling a story. You Brits are great. As much as I miss Green Wing I am sure glad the US hasn’t mucked a version up.

Thanks god for region-free DVD players. I have all the seasons of SPOOKS as they come out. America also is such a hypocritical puritanical place. We couldn’t even handle the NAME “SPOOK”. I am surprised some fringe group in the US isn’t offended by MI5. I suppose America could handle a title like, “Guys That Sneak Around”.

We do have FRINGE…that is a pretty good story. It will probably be canceled sooner than later because Americans can keep more than 2 story lines at a time in our little heads.

While I love this show, am I the only one who winces at the very bad American accents? All the CIA bosses and the horrible Sarah C had the most unbelievable accents I ever heard. And kept switching in and out of them.
Am two series behind here and cannot convince husband to time this year’s UK vacation to see the inlaws to coincide with the airing of Spooks. Serious MI5 junkies in the US watch them over and over via Netflix.

FYI, for people in the states, all 9 seasons are now available on Netflix. Just yesterday they added season 5 (previously left out for some reason) and season 9, so they are all there now.

Just started watching this series on Netflix here in the States.
Question: So do they really intend to portray MI-5 as the total cock ups they come across as in the series, or is that just comedic relief?
Every episode so far has shown what colossal idiots the MI-5 members are.
Their childish mistakes get members killed regularly, and they are often too late to prevent acts of terrorism. If I worked for the real MI-5, I’d be sorely pissed off at the BBC. Unless of course they actually want people to think they are morons, so they will underestimate them. In that case, the show is a brilliant piece of psy-ops!!!! 😉

.. for the record, I’ve never written in ‘as a fan’ or thanked a TV station- I don’t even watch TV. I live in the US happily avoiding TV. don’t even own one. well.. Netflix (my movie rental hookup) offers Spooks, all 8 Series, and a friend recommended I give one episode a try. 80 episodes later (!), I just want to say BRAVO! to the BBC and the writers/creators/actors of Spooks.. standing ovation from over the pond for this huge grin on my face- for such first-rate, often spectacular entertainment! again, BRAVO!

I started watching Spooks last year as a Netflix suggestion. As a result I have seen all of the episodes and am addicted. I really can’t find anything here in the states that can compare to it. 24 was the closest but I like MI5 better. Hated to see Adam and Jo go. I am so sad to learn Roz is gone because I truely loved her grit. Say it isn’t so that next year will be the last. How do we let them know how popular the series is and to continue it

Forgot to mention in my above post that I personally enjoy watching the show immensely!!! It’s like watching a train wreck. You know you shouldn’t but you just can’t help yourself!
The stories are very interesting and well crafted, with a good dash of adventure and edge of your seat tension thrown in for good measure. Who knew that poking fun at government agencies could be so entertaining!!!

Just finished marathoning Spooks, instead of properly studying for exams (they went well anyways, haha). Thank god I don’t rely on the TV to watch the episodes – it would be too hard to wait a whole week to watch each new episode! I love this series! Season 9 was definitely not as good as the others. I wish most of the characters didn’t get replaced after a couple seasons – that new girl in season 9, Beth, was really terrible. Lame character, badly written, not a charismatic actress. The deal about Lucas being ‘John the random psychopath’ was really unlikely after the build-up on his character in past seasons… a tad unrealistic.
On a random note: There are so few television shows with talented writers and charismatic actors – the old ‘Nikita’ and Spooks are definitively top of the list.

Does anyone know: Is season 10 going to be its last? And, I know wikipedia isn’t the best source, but is season 10 really only going to have 6 episodes ????!!!!!

    • Jeffrey said, on April 16, 2011 at 1:17 pm

      I know what you mean!
If this was an old Star Trek show EVERYONE would be wearing a red shirt!
Not even main characters are safe. It seems MI-5 doesn’t have to worry about retirement pensions, no one lives long enough to draw one, except maybe Harry, but that remains to be seen. LOL

In Australia we get the episodes as they’re made, without too many complications, apart from being late.
So far this has been the best program I’ve ever seen on television – without exaggeration.
I hope the comments I’m reading don’t turn out to be disappointing as they sound, though!

  50. Mal said, on April 19, 2011 at 2:17 am

I would have to agree with some of the comments here regarding the writing quality of Season 9. Compared with the previous Seasons, this one just seemed the lack the intensity and multidimensional approach that the other Seasons. Previously, there was immense gusto…and then some…and at the end of each episode, you were exhausted from all the various plot angles but still pining for more. I hope Season 10 is a return to this style.

Holds me onto the edge of my seat every Tuesday night at 10pm EDT here in Florida. Hope it’s still going to be on—guess that means I’d better be getting a job and donating to my local PBS station to keep it on the air, considering we don’t get Dr Who or Monty Python here….Anyway, can’t wait to see season 10!

I’ve loved Spooks from its very beginning, when I too discovered it on our local PBS station under the MI5 American title. I really miss Tom and wish they would bring him back for this last series. Now, I watch the series on watchseries.eu. All nine series eps are on the site. Cheers and looking forward to series 10.

Love, love, love the program. Discovered it years ago on A&E and have followed it on Neflix, youtube, PBS or any way that I can get episodes. Lucas was just ok to me. It was only a matter of time before they made one of the main characters rogue. I still miss the original cast, although I loved Rupert Penry Jones’ Adam Carter. Hate they left the son orphaned. I love Colin Salmon in anything, so that was a welcome addition. Just brilliant to me. Yes, some were better than others, but just like Waking the Dead I think it still shows some legs. Dmitri could be developed more. Don’t think I will miss Beth. For God sakes, why can’t Harry and Ruth be together???!!

Problem with the US. Most television watchers (consumers) are mindless drones. They can’t follow complex stories of multiple threads and multiple characters. The are perfect for selling Cheerios, Viagra, a car, Burger King to. Americans (I am one) have the attention span of a one-celled amoeba. As a result, those of us that love complexity have to look outside the US…to the Brits!!!! Thanks goodness for them…for SPOOKS, COUPLINGS, GREEN WING…

BTW, another ridiculous aspect of American mentality. We couldn’t handle the name of the series SPOOKS. It had to be sanitized into MI-5. I am SIXTY and NEVER considered SPOOKS to be racial…it mean ghosts or spies.

  59. Phil said, on May 27, 2011 at 11:41 pm

Ah Bill, yet another self-hating American. In my experience folks in the US are no more mindless drones than those in any European country. Sure MI-5 is better than most US programming. It’s also better than most BBC programming.

The best American television and films are as good as anything the international media markets have to offer, and in many ways are still the standard young artists worldwide aspire to. Our film schools are full of overseas students for exactly that reason.

And in the last couple decades cable studios like HBO have virtually reinvented narrative motion pictures. Take, for example, the Sopranos…a story *86* hours long with all manner of interwoven plot lines.

In short I probably like Spooks/MI-5 every bit as much as you do, but I don’t feel any compulsion to bash America because of it.

p.s. “Spooks” is British slang. There’s American slang ripe for misinterpretation if exported to the UK as well. “Two countries separated by a common language” I believe is the operative phrase.

Flat ending of the latest series, I thought. Or maybe the writers are setting it up for the next. With the “buzzards circling” for Harry, now maybe he will go rogue. Why did nothing ever come of Harry knocking off the previous Home Secretary, at the very start of this series? It just happened and was never mentioned again. That was a great opener and I was waiting for it to explode into the storyline. They should have made one more ep to finish this series, pulling that plot thread through, and it could have worked really well with the latest Home Sec’s “threat” against Harry. Anyway, much awaiting the next series …

    • sharon fried said, on June 4, 2011 at 9:20 pm

Pat, sorry you missed what happened to Zoe.

In the middle of series 3 (not the final episode), Zoe was on a mission where she was implicated in ordering the death of the man she was spying on. She was put on trial, which Harry was assured was for show only and Zoe would receive nothing more than a slap on the wrist. Instead, she was sentenced to 10-years imprisonment.

Harry, being the great boss that he is, supports Zoe by offering her a new identity, with the stipulation that she must relocate to South America–Chile, I believe it was. The very end of the episode shows Danny in tears convincing Zoe to take the deal and saying goodbye to his friend. The final scene shows Danny receiving one of those special postcards with a hidden message. He tears apart the inner message to see a photo and Zoe and her boyfriend in a tropical location.

We truly don’t have the same type of programming writers. Loved Monarch of the Glen, Bramwell, Luther (can’t wait till it’s next season also), Blood in the Wire(I think that was the name….except the movie made set in Texas…..was….ughhh!), and many others. Only the first three seasons are worth watching, then over the next couple of seasons of decent UK show goes American with too many car chases and bombs going off and characters killed off left and right and unfinished plot lines. I’ve watched Spooks for years. Used to love it. Then maybe I grew up, or grew old, and the world changed as well. Spooks may be ‘topical’ but sadly the world outside is nowadays a far more excitng and terrifying place than Spooks world could ever be. So Spooks is losing out, So good thing it is ending, I think.

This weeks Spooks, while entertaining had the kind of ‘logic holes’ that make it unreal despitre its topicality. Dramatic devices need to fit in with reality.

    1. How did the handler know where the new Spooks lady and her daughter lived? Was she on Facebook, or in the telephone ditrectory? Did they tail her, and if so why didn’t she know?
    2. When Dimitri got to the handler on the balcony, Dimitri apparebtly went under in the fight. Now Dimitri is supposedly ex SBS. Those guys really know how to handle unarmed combat. So Dimitri going down to the handler may have been a dramatic device so he could be hero later on and shoot the guy, but it was fundamentally unrealistic given his characters background.
    3. When Dimitri was rushing to rescue the daughter, while the others were with the bomber in TS, Dmitri seemed to get from TS to the residence where the daughter was hostage in a very short time (10-15 mins, less?). This would seem a bit unrealistic given London traffic at any time of day. Spooks is too close to reality in terms of realiostic action sequences and logic of events for these ‘slips’ to be let in.

So maybe its better that it is ending. We’ll remember it as it was before the world changed and became more exciting than TV…

  81. Saerwen said, on October 11, 2011 at 11:44 pm

I have watched Spooks from the very beginning and have been so disappointed with the writers of Series 10, the two of them were also responsible for Series 9. These guys seem to have no idea the continuity is most important when writing such a series as Spooks, they threw it out of the window with Lucas North and now they are showing no imagination in the last ever episodes, bombers we had before, cold war we’ve had before and story lines with plot holes you could drive a bus through.

Khananel I completely agree with you with Dimitri, having read several SBS memoirs he should have knocked that guy out easily, Spooks used to have a little of authentic spy tradecraft in their episodes to add to the interest , I would be seriously worried if the characters on Spooks were the best the real MI5 could do.
It’s a pity they didn’t get the creator of Spooks David Wolstencroft to write the last every Series with also being a author of two spy novels he certainly would have given us something in the true Spooks style to watch.

I thought last night was the last one? the BBC seem to have left it open, I thought they were going to kill them all off so there couldn’t be anymore?the presenter at the very start of the programe seemed to indicate that it would be an ‘EXPLOSIVE’ end, Well to me it was a damp squib. I can’t wait for the 11th season….great move bringing Matthew back, I actually cheered a little when he declared he had an appointment, he is the original and still the best:-) Was a good ending, especially after such an sad departing of Ruth. I was almost hoping Harry took the glass knife and Ruth stepped up to run the show……almost… 😉
Great show, hope it continues to get better every season.
    cheers!

I’d agree with many of the new posts about this final series. On the one hand it was a disapointment compared with previous series. I didn’t watch Spooks from the start, but bought all of the DVD box sets over the last year, so they are all quite fresh for me. I liked the new characters, but my main disapointment is that there are so many new and interesting things happening out in the world at the moment, particularly in the Middle East, that the writers entirely missed the boat. Peter Firth was not quite on the mark when he said the Grid has had to deal with every menace, and that all that’s left for future series is repetition. Spooks was normally so good at fitting the moment (often filming these observations before the event itself!) that the story arc of series 10 almost seemed irrelivant to the world as it is. As someone else already said here, Spooks just hasn’t kept pace with the amazing things going on in the world.

On the other hand the fact that the Grid goes on, and with with Harry at the helm (albeit without Ruth, although we all expected both of them would cop it) and with a glimpse of an old friend (Tom Quinn) seems so optimistic. If I thought there would be any hope of getting the BBC/Kudos to go back on their decision to cancel I’d be pleading right now. For so long Spooks was the only thing worth watching, and now it’s gone. At least in my mind the characters go on, and this time no one has to die…

It was a great series, but the last episode was ultimately a great disappointment in the end (despite some great drama earlier on) – why couldn’t the writers give us a happy ending for once??

Furthermore, the MI5 characters in this series have always been woefully inadequate with their first aid – which seems more than a tad unrealistic. For example, Harry declared his CIA colleague dead on the road in the penultimate episode – I’m sorry! but being a section head of MI5 doesn’t qualify you to do that – only a medical doctor has that authority!

And I could have most certainly saved Ruth – even though my First Aider certificate is coming up for renewal soon!!

You do have a point – pneumothorax is easy enough to spot – and not that badly acted in this case. We know how to equalise pressure, and I’d have thought that Harry or at least Dmitri would have known basic procedures. Shame for Ruth that they didn’t.

I have loved the show but hated the ending. Guess I’m just one of the romantics out here. Maybe the ending could just be one of Ruths dreams or Harry’s nightmare and leave room for another series. Harry seemed to be able to get married and had several affairs so I don’t get why he wasn’t able to shoiw his feelings for Ruth in a more physical way. Don’t imagine they would live in the cottage because I can’t see him sitting still that long. The action in the series really produced a lot of tension; I found myself not wanting to look sometimes! Thanks for a great show!

      after spending much of a week watching all 10 seasons from beginning to end on Netflix Instant… i’m almost glad the Spooks are all nestled snug in their tv graves or wherever they are. almost. my eyes hurt. i’m exhausted from staying up til 3am for nights in a row. these characters invade my dreams. they sneak up on me in the midst of conversations & phone calls. i hear their voices in my head. “Harry? Harry….” or that wonderful Russian poetry of “we have a tortoise in our garden….” i need time to think about & tend to other things. i feel like a junkie coming off a long binge. but still, i hope BBC brings the show back with Sir Harry intact sometime soon. as unrealistic as that is to hope for. mean-while, my TV sits staring blindly into its own void. i lost the remote long ago & it won’t work w/o one. too bad. i don’t get to watch endless idiot commerce strut its vulgar song & dance routines whilst i stare blindly into their void. i’m glad the show didn’t follow the scripts of world events as shown on nightly “news”. as a recovering political junkie, i don’t want to know about that. it’s far more grim, sordid, depressing, fictional & filled with both “bad” guys & “good” telling grotesque lies, killing off millions of innocents, blowing people up & shooting them down than any TV series can hope to compare to. i prefer the antiquated trials & tribulations of the Spooks to the current insane mindless mechanical destruction of all life & hope & beauty in our world. i know the actors will take off their costumes & masks & leave the set to go have drinkies somewhere or go home to their families or dogs or cats & go to sleep to rise fresh for another filming the next day. they don’t really die anymore than cartoon characters do. unlike real people out fighting wars getting shot down or blown up & their real loved ones going through real heart wrenching anguish for them. give me fiction & acting & made-up drama with all its wounded heroes & heroines & villains with their costumes & masks any day instead of the brutal “reality” we’ve come to believe is “normal” in the 21st century! i’ll miss old Harry & crew. still, it all gets so quiet when the sound is turned off. i can hear the goldfish swimming as the night breathes softly around me. ahh sleep, perchance to dream. “Harry? Harry….We have a tortoise in our garden.” *’}

You have GOT to be kidding me! I have been watching the series on NETFLIX and just finished season 6 episode 9. This is the best television I have seen in years. Superb acting, true production quality, innovative and excellent writing. When the first of the main characters left the show I was surprised and a little disappointed. Then you bring Adam in and MORE! I have had to increase my core exercises so sitting on the edge of my seat doesn’t wear me out!
P.S. Give my regards to my brothers, the Royal Marines.

I’d hate to insult the brits on this wonderful series, but would the producers be interested in making a movie to extend the series? I just finished the whole series and still in want for more to watch. In a movie, there is more time to develop the story lines, character building, etc, in a much more extensive way. I think this series, the writers and directors, have the right stuff to really bring this show to the big screen and keep their work fresh and interesting. I am ordering the DVDs today to keep the series available to replay.

Undeniably believe that which you stated.
Your favorite reason appeared to be on the web the simplest thing to
be aware of. I say to you, I definitely get irked while people consider worries that they just do not know about.
You managed to hit the nail upon the top as well as defined out
the whole thing without having side-effects , people can take a signal.
Will probably be back to get more. Thanks

  97. You really make it seem so easy with your presentation but I find this matter to be really something which I think I would never
understand. It seems too complicated and extremely broad for me.
I am looking forward for your next post, I will try to get the hang of it!
